- Abstract
Steege nimbly works across many complex topics, from debates within phenomenology to the fractious politics of the Weimar Republic. Benjamin Steege's I An Unnatural Attitude: Phenomenology in Weimar Musical Thought i is a welcome addition to scholarship on music and philosophy, the history of music theory, and the culture of the Weimar Republic and post-Second World War West Germany. Steege recovers this early history of music phenomenology from a "loosely counterfactual historiographical perspective" (p. 22), in which he attempts to listen to and analyse music through the writings of the period's music phenomenologists.
