- Abstract
The carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common mononeuropathy of the hand. It affects between 2% and 5% of the population and commonly presented in women. Nighttime sensory symptoms appear at the onset of the disease, which is associated with sleep disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of sleep in 32 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. The ratio of women to men was 3:1. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to evaluate sleep quality. The results of our study found that 87.5% of patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome had poor sleep quality. Women with poor quality of sleep are 100% of patients. The most affected is the sleep duration. More than seven hours of sleep have only 12.5% of patients. Sleep disturbances are also a major cause of poor sleep quality, with 93.7% of patients suffering from them. Disturbances in daily activities were also observed at 43.8% of patients. In all components tested, women were more severely affected than men.
