- Abstract
This paper explores the relationship between the origin of early communities of Jesus' followers and the urban environment in which such communities arose. For the traditional approach there is no relationship. Nevertheless, the formation of a self-conscious and distinctive early christian identity occurs in mediterranean cities, far from Judea. Then, the origin of first Christian communities historically connected to the urban environment has to be understood as a phenomenon within the city, from which it draws its nourishment and on which it bases its identity and models itself according to the collective organization of the Graeco-Roman cities.
