The article analyzes the film "Affliction," directed by Paul Schrader and starring Nick Nolte and James Coburn. Particular attention is given to the concepts of love and masculinity in a neoliberal environment, specifically masculine authority, as portrayed in the violent relationship between a father and son who live in a rural, working-class environment.
