- Abstract
This article discusses the production of religious artwork in colonial Guatemala from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The author provides a brief history of the Spanish conquest and subsequent colonial period of Guatemala, with particular emphasis on the importance of religion in Guatemalan society, as described by the evangelistic movement in the 16th century. He also comments on the development of a rich artistic tradition in the country that included paintings, sculptures, and ornamental pieces. The article also presents several images of selected works of religious art from the period studied.
