- Abstract
An essay is presented on European responses to dancing in the Americas during the early colonial era. It comments on the attitudes of priests, including Franciscans, Dominicans, and Jesuits, and the missed opportunities to combine Christian rituals with Native American dance. Other topics include the role of women in dance and dance music and the views of English Protestant explorer Thomas Harriot. Areas discussed include modern-day Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Canada and the Southern U.S.
