- Abstract
The article examines the transformation of the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois in the post-World War II period from 1947 to 1977. Pilsen had thirteen principally Slavic-American Catholic Church parishes which became the city's first Mexican-American neighborhood. In the 1950's, an unnamed Mexican parishioner at St. Pius V Church declared gratitude to the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos. In 1962, a souvenir program from St. Pius V Church reported that Mexicans where moving to the neighborhood, placing their children in the school, and attending the church. Other topics include Mexican religious life, inculturation, and American Catholic Church views of Mexican immigrants.
