- Abstract
In this paper, I examined several names of river Sırderya, which is one of the two major rivers in Turkestan and from B.C. 4th century its names appeared in documents. Amongst these names the “silis” appeared in documents of 1st and 3rd centuries is Turkish and means “stream, river.” Again, for the first time noted in the 13th century the present name of Sırderya in documents and first part of it, Sir, is also Turkish and means “stream, river”, as silis. Śirma in Chuvash language and “ırmak” in general Turkish are related with each other. In general Turkish, the first letter of ırmak *d>y>ø exchanged by time. Also I explained that in 7th century Sıt (Yarkend river) noted by Hsuan - Tzang also related to Sır. Also I indicated and emphasized that the other names of Sırderya (Jaxartes) and Amuderya (Oxus) which are Seyhun and Ceyhun, and rivers names Seyhan and Ceyhan in Anatolia originated from Bible (Torah), but their origins and meanings can be solved by those skilled in the field of Semitic languages.
