- Title
BASTILLE DAY IN BAGHDAD.
- Authors
Hornyold, Antony
- Abstract
The article discusses the Iraq Revolution of 1958. Particular focus is given to what the author sees as similarities between the regicidal overthrow of King Faisal I and the French Revolution, symbolized by the storming of the Bastille which occurred in 1789 on the same date as the later Iraq Revolution. According to the author, both revolutions were initially greeted with enthusiasm by the general public and were followed by popular prosecutions of former leaders. Details on the Iraqi attitudes towards the Great Britain and the relationship between the Iraqi and British governments following the coup are also presented. Other topics include the Baghdad Pact, former Iraqi premier Nuri al-Said, and the group of revolutionaries known as the Free Officers.
