- Abstract
The article discusses the early period of the installation of the Seminary of Santa Fe, founded by the Portuguese in Goa, the arrival and cooperation of the Jesuits in this initiative and, finally, the transfer to the care of the Society of Jesus, which was disciplined by "Constitutions of the Seminary of Santa Fe". We sought to analyze the objectives of the seminary and its relevance within the Portuguese settler process, bearing in mind, especially, the reports contained in the documentary sources of that time and published in "Documenta Indica" (Wicki, 1948) and in the "Documentação para a História do Padroado Português do Oriente" (Rego, 1950). The timeframe used goes from 1541, year of foundation of the Seminary of Santa Fe, in Goa, until the year of 1548, when the Jesuits founded the College of São Paulo and attached the seminary to this institution. As we try to demonstrate, the Seminary of Santa Fe was an institution dedicated to Christianization and "aportuguesamento" of indigenous people: it was, at the same time, directed to both of the aims of Church and Crown.
