- Abstract
This study traces the historical development of the Journal of Music Therapy from the days before the National Association for Music Therapy was founded through the first decade of the Journal's existence. Just as the National Association for Music Therapy has roots in the National Music Council, the Journal of Music Therapy has roots in the Hospital Music Newsletter, which the National Music Council began publishing in 1948. Other publications important to the historical development of the Journal of Music Therapy are also identified and discussed including the NAMT annual books of proceedings and the Bulletin of the National Association for Music Therapy. Most importantly, the contributions of the people who bring the story of the National Association for Music Therapy alive and the issues they struggled with are identified and discussed. The study concludes with a discussion of the pre-eminent role that the Journal of Music Therapy has played in the development of the music therapy profession.
