The article explores the broad aspects of socio-cultural change in the African region from the precolonial period through the 1970s. Topics covered include the influence of the numerous groups of people with whom the Vai people interacted on their traditions, the effect of the changes in the broader spheres of Vai life on their music culture, and the influence of Muslims on the presence or absence or alteration of the Poro and Sande practices in Vai communities.
