- Title
Role of genetic factors in extinction of island endemics: complementary or competing explanations?
- Authors
Jamieson, I. G.
- Abstract
The article presents a response to various studies on the role of genetic factors in extinction of species. The author pointed out that genetic factors are accepted to have played a role in the recovery of wild populations. Others have taken the argument that the loss of fitness due to inbreeding depression is seen as an unavoidable consequence of small populations and therefore a contributor to the extinction risk of threatened species. The consequences of island isolation are also cited.
