- Title
Remarks on Moldovan Phonology and Ethnic Speech Identity.
- Authors
Coles, Felice A.; Dyer, Donald L.
- Abstract
The article discusses phonology in the Romano-Moldovan language. The authors explain a study they conducted in order to assess the different pronunciations of sixteen words by a group of Romanian speakers and a group of Moldovan speakers. They note that these sixteen words were originally used in the study that informed the article "Moldavian Linguistic Realities," which determined that the Moldovan language was essentially a dialect of the Daco-Romanian language written in Cyrillic script. More specifically, the authors identify a loss of palatalization in the pronunciation of certain words among Moldovan speakers. It is concluded that Moldovans claim a separate linguistic identity because their speech is a part of overall Moldovan ethnic identity.
