- Abstract
Reference norm application during classroom assessment has been investigated mainly under the perspective of a relatively stable, trans-situational preference. Very few studies have addressed the question whether the choice of a reference norm depends on the diagnostic objective. Therefore, students (N = 58) in a Master of Education program assessed the performance of nine fictive students (Kleine Beurteilungsaufgabe, KBA) in each of three contexts: A control condition (A), a condition with the objective of modification (B), and a condition with the objective of selection (C) suggest different reference norms. Additionally, the students specified the reference norm they had adopted during the assessments in explicit self-reports. The social reference norm dominated in the control condition. In contrast, under conditions B and C, the choice of reference norm depended on the context. Here, students chose the reference norm most adequate for the respective objective. Nevertheless, even here the results confirmed the dominance of the social reference norm, regardless of the objective. Based on the self-reports, we assume that the choice of an individual reference norm occurs intentionally, whereas the choice of a social reference norm occurs non-intentionally. The results are discussed with regard to the requirements of professional classroom assessment.
