- Abstract
This article analyzes mid-20th-century trends in corporate diversification, focusing on the issues associated with the acquisition of completely unrelated businesses. Examples are drawn from cases involving companies such as Esmark, Bendix, RCA and Litton. The corporate strategy involved is analyzed as an evolution in business which was not predicted by microeconomic theory. The ways in which unrelated diversification serves as a method for companies in mature industries to branch out into fields with more growth potential are discussed.
