- Title
Free Speech in the Age of McCarthy: A Cautionary Tale.
- Authors
Stone, Geoffrey R.
- Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the period of the U.S. Senator, Joseph McCarthy. Joseph McCarthy after graduating from Marquette University Law School, struggled for several years as a small-town lawyer in Wisconsin. Then, in 1939, he ran successfully for a state circuit judgeship. At thirty years of age, he became the youngest judge ever elected in the county. His campaign tactics were regarded as bare-knuckled, ferocious, dishonest, and devastatingly effective. After fracturing his foot during a prank, he falsified a military citation, claiming he had been injured in combat.
