- Abstract
The present study by Frank Engehausen, titled "Workshop of Democracy: The Frankfurt National Assembly 1848/49," narrates and analyzes the history of the first German national parliament. The author sheds light on both the similarities and differences between the democratic aspirations and practices of that time and the present. The book covers the organizational aspects of the parliament, the political development of various governments and ministries, as well as parliamentary social forms and public relations. It also addresses key topics of the Frankfurt debates such as freedom, equality, the nation-state, and popular sovereignty. A focal point of the study lies in the division between radical democrats and moderate liberals. The author also compares the parliamentary and democratic practices of the Frankfurt National Assembly with those of the present Federal Republic. The book offers a vivid portrayal of parliamentary debates and provides a sense of the political rhetoric of the time. It also includes satirical illustrations from the revolution. However, the study does not reference foreign-language secondary literature and neglects recent publications on the National Assembly and the revolution.
