- Abstract
This paper discusses some of the strategies that the author has used to teach the Meiji Restoration in his East Asian History survey course. Seeking to make this pivotal event meaningful to students by helping them understand not only its national and international significance, but also the personal meaning it had for Japanese, he has tried teaching a range of different films and texts. This essay focuses in particular on his use of Takashi Miike's film Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai and Natsume Sōseki's classic novel Kokoro.
