- Title
Visibility and Iconicity of the German Language in The Kindly Ones.
- Authors
Aslanov, Cyril
- Abstract
Apart from striving for an effect of authenticity, the heavy presence of German terms in Littell's The Kindly Ones may be due to the near-fetishistic opinion that many German words cannot be properly translated into French because of the primeval character of German, a language that is allegedly not derived from any other language ("Ursprache"). The role of German within Littell's fictional construction varies depending on the places described, on the other languages used, and according to the analytical level of this highly stratified text. Together, the languages embedded in the text coexist as heteroglossic voices in a polyphonic orchestration where the human tongue loses its communicative function and assumes a merely iconic status within the semiotic horizon.
