- Abstract
The article presents a study which aims to examine longitudinal trends in volume, utilization, and outcomes for primary and revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between 1991 and 2010 in the U.S. Medicare population. It informs that TKA is a common and safe procedure for relief of severe knee arthritis pain. The study is conducted as increase in TKA can be viewed as an indication of the success of arthroscopy in reducing pain and improving functional status for an aging population. It is concluded that the increases in TKA volume are associated with both increases in the number of Medicare enrollees and in per capita utilization.
