- Abstract
A new generation of leaders awaits on the horizon to assume positions of prominence in organizations. It is vital that today's leaders understand how to transform, support, and prepare this wave of young professionals. A leadership pipeline needs to be developed for future organizational success. This paper focuses on an understanding of five essential elements for aspiring leaders. The first is to understand the significance and importance of effective leadership. Leadership and management are discussed as contrasting concepts, as well as overlapping functions. Secondly, aspiring leaders must understand that leadership is a process, not a position. They must embrace the notion that leadership is an interaction between leader, followers, and situation. The third essential consideration enumerates in detail the complex role of motivating others. Point four views ethical and values-based leadership, noting the strong relationship between ethics, values, attitudes, and leadership. The final point is a note on transformational leadership as the heart of leader development.
