- Abstract
The article presents an overview of land policies in British Columbia from 1887-1929 and the ideology of a Dominion and provincial surveyor named William Stewart Drewry who is characterized as a change agent. Drewry's life as a surveyor, his method for classifying and measuring landscape, and his view of nature as a commodity are discussed. A historical analysis of international literature on land surveying and the concept of recasting pre-existing geography is also presented. The use of photo-topography by Drewry and surveyor J. J. McArthur to map the Rocky Mountain Railway Belt is noted. The idea that surveying can be a system that integrates communities, supports state-building, and remakes knowledge and power is discussed.
