An essay is presented on the history of domestic partnerships in the U.S. Particular attention is given to the activism of Tom Brougham, a worker employed by the city of Berkeley, California. Brougham had the goal of establishing a new category for same-sex couples that would be separate, but equal to traditional marriage. Information about the activism carried out by the East Bay Lesbian/Gay Democratic Club is also provided.
