- Title
What becomes of at-risk gay youths?
- Authors
Berger, Colby
- Abstract
The essay mentions the problem of at-risk gay youths in the United States. Research has shown that many homeless and runaway youths are GLBT-identified. Although there are several factors contributing to homelessness, the main factors are homophobia and intolerance. GLBT young people who have been rejected by their families and community lose their self-esteem and are difficult to place in foster homes. In Massachusetts, the Home for Little Wanderers is the largest agency serving at-risk youths by offering a number of programs such as Health Strong and Proud, Different Directions, and the Waltham House group home. The Home for Little Wanderers received funds from the Tides Foundation and developed a training model used by social workers to educate various professionals about GLBT youth issues.
