- Abstract
Purpose: Motor vehicle thefts are a daily problem, especially in larger cities. Analysing the thefts, our aim was to present an applied value of mapping for analysts in the fields of searching the patterns and determining locations as well as foreseeing the events. Moreover, we intended to present applicability of ArcGIS programme in analysing criminal offences. Design/Methods/Approach: We analysed the issue of motor vehicle thefts by crime mapping, using ArcGIS program. This enabled the visualization of data from the police database on geolocation of crimes in the Republic of Slovenia. In the analysis we limited ourselves to the area of the Municipality of Ljubljana and the period 2008-2012. Findings: We established that the increased problem of motor vehicle thefts occurs especially in areas that are somewhat distant from the city centre of Ljubljana but still within the city bypass. Unprotected parking lots near residential buildings are the most problematic, especially during the night time. Research Limitations: The main restriction is a questionable consistency in recording details of offenses under consideration. The available data contained time that supposed to represent the time when a motor vehicle was stolen, but we found out that this is actually a time, when crime was reported to the police. The police record the data on the time, when a stolen motor vehicle was last seen as well, but this information was not available to us. It would be interesting to see the time span between the time when the vehicle was last seen and the time when the theft was reported to the police. Practical Implications: The practical applicability is represented mainly by the proposals for reducing motor vehicle thefts that we made according to the results of the analyses. Originality/Value: We believe that the use of ArcGIS program for research is not as developed as it might be, so we wanted to present the applicability in the visualization and processing of the available data.
