The author discusses developments in the operation of the Bureau of Economic Geology in the U.S. as of January 2012. He claims that the bureau has three major research thrust areas, namely, energy, environment and economy. He cites the bureau-related programs that he is involved in, including subsurface micro- and nanosensors for enhanced recovery and energy education.
