- Abstract
The article discusses the facilitation of effective communication with communication-vulnerable and nonverbal patients to avoid compromise of patient safety and risk of negative emotional consequences. Topics covered include measures for healthcare staff to support patients' communication of their healthcare needs, and the importance of listening and responding to the patient's cues and requests to effectively communicate. Also noted is the need to involve all stakeholders in the effort.
