- Abstract
The article looks at U.S. debates surrounding public debt following the U.S. Civil War. Particular focus is given to the debt's political and symbolic importance. It is suggested that while the U.S. was in no actual danger of default, politicians used concerns over the repudiation, repayment, and refunding of U.S. public debt as a means of gaining political advantage. Details on Republican associations of the debt with patriotism and on Democratic proposals to repay the debt with devalued currency are presented. Other topics include taxation, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and political gridlock.
