- Abstract
The article presents a description of the petrographic practices of ancient American civilizations, particularly those of the Southwestern Native Americans. Details are given noting the prevalence of pictographic art on several media, including on basketwork, pottery, and cave walls. Discussion is given regarding the common elements of petrography of ancient America, including a unified symbolic language used in most examples, geographic locations, and common themes of what is depicted in them. Additional speculation is given concerning their cultural purpose.
