- Abstract
The semantic and syntactic complexity of the verb quedar constitutes a significant problem for current linguistic analysis. In distinguishing meanings of permanence from those of location, many studies have equated quedar with the verb estar. Yet this equivalence does not solve cases in which the verb not only designates location but also incorporates the notion of trajectory. Based on an analysis of oral Mexican Spanish, this paper proposes that the notion of result in quedar operates as the basis to designate both resultative (change of state) and locational (change location and abstract movement) situations. Although quedar can configure different domains, all meanings preserve a resultative configuration. Thus, the semantic differences correspond to spatial and temporal correlations in which the semantic change over time involves a high degree of subjectification.
