- Abstract
The article discusses steps to reduce inappropriate hospitalization of patients with palliative care needs. The reasons for inappropriate admissions include inability by family carers to cope up the situation, the rescue culture of modern medicine, the finance and availability of community services. Interventions to reduce hospital admissions must target societal understandings of death and dying within the context of medicalisation, cultural and ethnic diversity in attitudes.
