- Abstract
This article provides a historical account of the life of Josephine Bowzer Lillie Parker, a Native American woman who lived in the Yakima Valley in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Josephine faced challenges in her relationship with her husband, Nevada Lillie, and tensions with her father, Joe Bowzer. However, she achieved independence and financial security through land ownership and leasing. The article also discusses the historical context of the Dawes Act and the allotment of tribal land. Josephine's story is one of determination and strength, and she is remembered as a prominent figure in the development of Toppenish.
