- Abstract
The article discusses the fundamental assumptions for the inventor's decision to file for patents in the U.S. It examines the prevalent theories of why inventors inquire for patent and hashes out common observations and anecdotes that supports and rejects the theories. Moreover, it describes the Kauffman Foundation survey entitled "The 2008 Berkeley Patent Survey: Entrepreneurial Companies and the Patent System," which primarily aims to determine what motivates invention and innovation for entrepreneurs and startup companies.
