- Title
Unconditional Space: Turning Risk into Resilience.
- Authors
Smart, Max
- Abstract
The article focuses on how unconditional space can be used to help problem youth. The author discusses an adolescent with behavioural problems in Scotland who was given an unconditional space where he was able to interact with staff who focused on his needs. The author suggests that an interpersonal space allows youth to build competence and self-esteem through autonomy and altruism. Youth are able to develop resilience and a sense of belonging by forming relationships, channelling creativity and frustration, and diverting energy into a positive activity, according to the author.
