- Abstract
The article presents a true story regarding the distressed U.S. OS2U-3 Kingfisher in Ominato Bay, Japan in August 1945. It mentions the continuous exchange of fire during the last period of the World War II, where the said sea warplane, from the U.S.S. North Carolina, was hovering around the bay to save the besieged American navymen. Meanwhile, it cites the challenges encountered by Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) Vernon Columbre when his Corsair got troubled due to Japanese fire and notes his strategy to escape from the enemies' probing. It denotes how he was saved by the Kingfisher which was piloted by Lieutenant Ralph Jacobs. However, it tells the dilemma faced by Jacobs after his plane caught by the enemies' fire. The rescue process of the two pilots and to the Kingfisher is also noted.
