- Abstract
This article is a response to a letter regarding a study on the effectiveness of PSA screening for reducing prostate cancer mortality. The study found that an invitation to a single PSA screening test resulted in 1 fewer prostate cancer death per 1000 men compared to the control group over a 15-year follow-up period. The study acknowledged that not all invitees accepted the offer of a PSA test, but the screening intervention still led to a significant increase in the detection of prostate cancer. The study also included an analysis that showed a greater reduction in mortality for men who attended the PSA screening clinic. However, the absolute risk of prostate cancer death remained very low. The article also mentions ongoing research that will provide further data on prostate cancer-specific mortality. In response to another letter, the authors agree that new noninvasive tools may improve targeted prostate cancer screening, but there is currently no clinical evidence that shedding of prostate cancer cells during biopsy leads to progressive or lethal disease.
