- Abstract
There are more and more older adults who want to spend their old age in their familiar home environment, even though their abilities are limited, and they have difficulties in performing everyday activities. The departure of relatives, the losses in life, health problems, the decline of physical resilience, strength and efficiency are factors that negatively affect their quality of life. Older adults often struggle with loneliness, depression, loss of meaning and self-confidence. In a qualitative study, we explored the importance of pets to older adults living in a home setting and how they contribute to quality of life. We conducted in-depth interviews with five older adults living in a home setting who have a pet that they care for or have regular contact with. Based on the qualitative analysis, we formed two categories: general about pets with two subcategories and importance of pets for older adult - positive and negative aspects with three subcategories. We found that older adults who have pets in their living environment exercise more, are more active and motivated to perform daily activities, feel less lonely, are happier, and lead more fulfilling and quality lives. Thus, contact with and care for animals offer great potential for increased activity, satisfaction, and quality of life among older adults.
