- Abstract
This article presents the author's view on the field of speech communication. Gradually he came to realize that he would have to write this article out of his own difficulties and frustrations and confusions and collusion, his own ambitions and aspirations. Not about "Speech Communication," but about his own life in the discipline. And about how his own distinct experience as an outsider with strong familial feelings has shaped his thinking about his adopted field. As he discusses his affiliation with two communication departments, the University of Virginia and the University of Texas at Austin, he hopes that the story possesses significance beyond his own case, at least with regard to the self-image and status of the field in leading research institutions. For academe today face a spiritual crisis incomparably more difficult than any transition in its recent past, and the identity crisis in communication studies, in particular the precarious situation of the rhetorical and speech tradition, both reflects the academy's larger crisis of mission and is well-positioned to address it.
