FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH IN UNDERGRADUATE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENTS.
- Authors
Clement, Wm. H.
- Abstract
The article presents a study on the state of research carried out in chemistry departments in the U.S. The study is based on information available and seeks to permit assignment of the role of small colleges in basic research, to allow improved evaluation of the present trend toward increased emphasis on faculty and student research and to provide governmental and private agencies the proper financial support for research. Random monthly issues of noted chemistry research journals are examined. Only one case appeared from an undergraduate school in which the volume of basic research publication is low suggesting that in small colleges, few significant chemical investigation is conducted and the rate of basic research publication is slightly higher.
