- Abstract
The article presents a critique of the poem "Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction" by Wallace Stevens. Specific attention is given to an exploration of the appearance, nature and effect of allegorical personae within the poem. Other topics include background on the poem "Sea Surface Full of Clouds," in which Stevens discovered the fiction that results from feeling, Stevens' views on cultural change, and the impact of the poet's self-consciousness about metaphor on the artificiality of his personae.
