The article critiques novels by Charles Dickens in terms of his possible understanding of the psychology of expectation. Topics discussed include the disillusionment expressed by Dickens with the U.S. which have been demonstrated in "Martin Chuzzlewit," the self-delusion of the protagonist named Pip in "Great Expectations," and an overview of the plot, characters, and theme of "Dombey and Son."
