- Abstract
A recent study published in the European Heart Journal examined the association between chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the risk of hospital admission for major cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The study included nearly 60 million Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older in the contiguous USA. The results showed that exposure to PM2.5 was associated with an increased risk of hospital admissions for various CVD subtypes, with ischaemic heart disease and heart failure being the most prevalent. There was no identified safe threshold for PM2.5 exposure, and the risk of hospitalization increased with higher levels of exposure. The study also found that susceptibility to PM2.5 varied based on factors such as age, gender, education, access to healthcare, and neighborhood-related deprivation. The findings highlight the importance of reducing air pollution to mitigate the adverse effects on cardiovascular health.
