Conquering the chill: solutions for winter skin.

- Abstract
During the winter months, cold temperatures, wind, and low humidity can cause dryness and exacerbate existing skin conditions. Pharmacists can assist customers in preventing and managing winter skin issues by educating them on different categories of moisturizers and the importance of sun protection. It is recommended to avoid soap and use moisturizer frequently, applying enough to cover the whole body. Winter can also worsen existing skin issues such as rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema, so it is important to take precautions and use appropriate products. Simple tips to prevent dry skin include staying hydrated, limiting bath and shower times, using gentle patting techniques to dry the skin, and using humidifiers in the house. Different categories of moisturizers include humectants, occlusives, and emollients, each serving a specific purpose in retaining moisture. It is important to select a moisturizer that suits individual needs and can be applied frequently. Additionally, there are common myths about winter skincare, such as not needing sunscreen in winter or that thicker moisturizers are always better, which pharmacists can help debunk.
