- Abstract
The article presents an in-depth examination into the theatrical adaptation of the 1796 Gothic novel "The Monk," by Matthew Gregory Lewis, into the play "Aurelio and Miranda," by James Boaden, and staged at Drury Lane in London, England in 1798 by John Philip Kemble. Discussion is offered highlighting multiple aspects of the novel which were changed for the stage version. Further commentary is offered regarding its reception at performance.
