- Abstract
This article focuses on an account of the successful efforts of a citizens' group to provide casework services for the community of Richmond, California, by sponsoring a group of professional social workers in part-time private practice. All social work members of the group participating in this venture were employed full time in social work agency positions. Time devoted to private practice was in addition to full time employment. Each social worker had adequate resources for consultation available as a result of individual professional associations. It was recognized that psychological, psychiatric, and medical consultation would be needed from time to time to ensure effective service. Administrative matters such as evaluation or revision of procedures and policies were considered and resolved at monthly meetings of the group. Statistical reporting of case activity and the continuing development of the group's operation were reported quarterly to the board. Such a group can coexist with the traditional family service agency that could continue to fulfill the essential functions beyond direct client service such as development of professional staff, community education, and national standard-setting for professional practice.
