- Title
VIOLA'S 'DO NOT EMBRACE ME' AS ICON.
- Authors
Lewis, Cynthia
- Abstract
The article focuses on the Viola's refusal to touch or be touched by her recovered twin Sebastian in the drama "Twelfth Night," by William Shakespeare. At this miraculous moment of reunion, Viola's reserve may well strike the audience as frosty. Yet Viola's odd behavior towards Sebastain can also be understood as thoroughly appropriate if one recognizes an allusion to the encounter at the tomb between resurrected Christ and Mary Magdalene. Shakespeare play upon the Biblical story in at least two ways, insuring the inconographical connection. First, the prolonged, stilted questioning between the twins as to identity of each echoes Mary Magdalene's inability to recognize the risen Christ at the Sepulchre
