- Abstract
The article discusses the Pura Belpré Award which recognizes and celebrates Latino authors and illustrators who positively portray Latino cultural experiences. The award was established by the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to the Spanish Speaking (REFORMA) and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) in 1996. Books that receive a Belpré Award are regarded as works that promote Latino cultural literacy, ethnic cultural development, and cultural pride. It also presents several books to have received the Belpré Award including "The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom," by Margarita Engle, "Before We Were Free," by Julia Alvarez, and "Los Gatos Black on Halloween," written by Marisa Montes and illustrated by Yuyi Morales.
