- Abstract
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), signed in 1968, aims to control the world's nuclear weapons, promote cooperation in the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and achieve nuclear disarmament. However, the treaty faces threats to its existence and effectiveness due to geopolitical tensions and the advancement of controversial nuclear programs, such as those of Iran and North Korea. The text addresses the ineffectiveness of the UN's role in regulating nuclear weapons in the contemporary global scenario, highlighting the resistance of countries like Brazil in signing the Additional Protocol, the uncertainties generated by the advancement of the Iranian nuclear program and the third North Korean nuclear test, leading the NPT to a moment of uncertainty and instability. Furthermore, the great resistance of nuclear powers to getting rid of their atomic arsenals raises moral questions about the NPT. These challenges highlight the need for renewed commitment and practical measures to reduce the risk of nuclear war and promote a world free of nuclear weapons, reinforcing the importance of open and transparent dialogue among nations to achieve this goal.
