- Abstract
Objective: To demonstrate the experience of the nephrology team in performing percutaneous biopsies in a tertiary referral hospital and to analyze the prevalence of kidney disease, the profile of patients and complications after the procedure. Method: Retrospective study, based on the analysis of 493 reports of patients who underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous renal biopsy in the Nephrology department of a large teaching hospital, from May 2016 to May 2020. Results: In the 4 years covered by the study, 493 biopsies were performed at the Service, of which 260 (52.7%) were male and 233 (47.3%) female. The average age of the biopsied patients was 44 years (±16.42). Of all the biopsies, 305 (62%) were carried out on native kidneys and 188 (38%) on transplanted kidneys. The average number of glomeruli obtained in each procedure was 12 (±8.86). The presence of crescents was detected in 35 (7%) biopsies. The most common diagnosis was chronic graft nephropathy (n=103; 20.15%), followed by lupus nephritis (n=56; 10.95%). Only 11 biopsies (2.15%) were inconclusive. Hematuria was the most frequent complication (n=19; 3.85%), along with pain at the biopsy site (n= 19; 3.85). Only 5 patients developed perirenal hematoma, corresponding to 1% of the procedures. Conclusion: Renal biopsy using the methodology described proved inconclusive in only 11 biopsies (2.15%). The complication rate was low compared to other series, which allows us to verify the efficacy and safety of the procedure performed by a nephrology team.
